Unsolved Deepdive; Mysteries, Roanoke Island

The What: This is a case that has interested me for decades. I still remember first learning about Roanoke in elementary school. I was shocked to learn that over a hundred people could go missing and we still have no idea what actually happened to them.

The Background: During the late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I of England decided to take a leaf out of her distant relatives in Spain; set up colonies in the Americas. In July of 1587, 118 people sailed to North America with the intent to set up English Colonies. On August 27th, the leader of the colony, John White sailed back to England for supplies. However, due to tensions between England and Spain, White was unable to return to the colony until August of 1590. To his horror, the settlement had been disbanded, homes and buildings completely dismantled. The only note to what happened what "CROATOAN".  To this day, no one knows what happened to the settlers.

My Thoughts: I am still tormented by this case. I have no idea what happened. It's likely that they ran out of food and sought out help from the indigenous peoples around them or they ran out of food and were attacked/they feared the indigenous peoples around them. I started a novel about this subject; I'll keep you updated if it turns into anything.

Unsolved Deepdive; Enigmas, the code of the Shurgborough Inscription

The What: In Staffordshire, England there is a manor house wit a code that has remained unsolved since it was written in 1748. The image looks like this:

   O.U.O.S.V.A.V.V

D                             M.

Though a few have believed to have solved the code, from what I have seen, none have been able to crack the D and the M. They also have not taken into account the . in between each letter. (I was not able to translate it onto this blog, but the . is actually directly centered between each letter, so like a period, but moved up higher.

My Thoughts: When looking at the monument this code is written on, there appears to be a gap below the code. Many have thought that this code is a phrase in Latin. It think it is a phrase that requires a response. Meaning, when you crack the code, you will come up with a phrase that can be put back into the formula of the code. The image would then end up looking like a simi-reflection.

Unsolved Deepdive; Deaths, the death of Mary Rogers

The Case: Mary Rogers* was a socialite of the New York City art scene in 1841. Her beauty had been written about countless times... as well as one reported suicide attempt. Mary had told her family she was going to visit her aunt on July 25th. Rogers' body was found in the Hudson river on July 26th, 1841. It was never determined what had happened to her.

My Thoughts: This case is a pretty easy solve. I believe Rogers had taken her own life. Suspicion plagued her fiance, Daniel Payne, who later took his own life at the very spot she was taken out of the water. Many say this act of suicide is further evidence of his guilt. However, I would argue that if he was feeling guilt over her death, he would have taken his life where he killed her, not where she was taken out of the water. There have also been that have supposed that Rogers' death was an act of gang violence or a botched abortion, but I see little to support either of these. Gangs slip up and will sometimes confess to their murders. If she had been pregnant, she would have just married her fiance, whether the child was his or not.

*Not to be confused with Mary Rogers (1883-1805) the last woman given the death penalty by the state of Vermont.

Unsolved Deepdive; Enigmas, The Green Children of Woolpit

The Who: This is a story I have come across quite a few times. back in 1135 two children appeared in Woolpit, England. Their skin was green. The boy died within days of the village taking the children in. The girl told the townsfolk that they had wondered through a cave from another world in which they lived in twilight and everyone had green skin.

My Thoughts: Aliens.

No, I'm joking, but that would be cool. I googled what can cause your skin to turn green and the internet said "Hypochromi anemia". I mean from what I can tell that would make sense. What doesn't make sense is the girl's story. To me it sounds like a lot of the traditional folklore from England in that time (stories of the fairfolk and such). Some say the children could have been Flemish and gotten sick from the ship ride over. And that makes sense too. Honestly, the best thing to do would be to give any remains a DNA test. I think that would clear up a lot of the issues.

Unsolved Deepdive; Enigmas, The Circleville Letters

"The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out of a Word of it."
-Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
The What: In Circleville, Ohio starting in 1976 a much of anonymous threatening and concerning letters were sent to the homes of residence. One resident, Mary Gillespie, was made a particular target. The letters were accusing her of having an affair, which at the time she stated was not true. (She later admitted to having an affair, but it had ended before she received her first letter). However the letters did not stop. She made her husband, Ron, aware of what was going on. One day, in August of 1977, he received a phone call. After talking on the phone with someone, he told his family he knew who their tormentor was, grabbed his pistol, and sped away in his truck. His truck flew off the road and struck a tree and he was killed. Laters tests show his blood alcohol limit was well over the legal limit and results showed he had fired his pistol once before the accident.

Suspects: One day Mary noticed a sign threatening the life of one of her children. She went to take the sign down and noticed with was attached to a booby trapped gun (meaning if she had taken the sign down, it would have shot her). Paul Freshour, Ron's brother in law, was traced to the gun. After further handwriting analysis, Freshour's handwriting was matched to well over 400 of the letters, however the sheriff later admitted on the stand that Freshour was instructed to write in block letters and told to copy the original letters. He was arrested and sent to prison for attempted murder. Freshour denied any connection to the letters and the attempt on Mary's life, even after being sent to prison.
And still the letters continued for another 25 years.

My Thoughts: This sounds like an Agatha Christie novel, The Moving Finger to be more specific. Right down to the false affair accusations. The most logical part of my brain says Paul Freshour developed some sort of obsession with Mary Gillespie. However, what would have to gain from that?
There is apart of me that thinks Paul was a fall guy. Mary and Ron had believed that Paul was the one writing the letter for a while. But what led them to this? According to Mary, it was Paul's wife Karen who had initially begun to point fingers. But what made them think it was Paul? Paul had nothing to gain from this.
Another bus driver that worked with Mary stated she had driven past the past the spot Mary found the gun about twenty minutes before Mary. She said she saw a man standing there next to a yellow El Comino. When she drove past, the man turned his face away from the road, as though he didn't want to be seen.
First, I think we need to find the owner of this Yellow El Comino. I think I've been able to figure out a source who knows the owner's name and I'm considering reaching out to this person. Second, we need to figure out who else was receiving letters. Over a thousand letters were sent. I definitely think some of them must have been from copy cats and a few bored teens; those need to be weeded out. We need to figure out WHO specifically was the real target of these letters. Was it Mary? Was it Paul? Or was it someone else? Finally, I think working backwards, we should be able to figure out who the letter writer is. I'll for sure be coming back to this one sometime soon.

Unsolved Deepdive; Crimes, The Salish Sea Feet

The What?: So there's been some weird nonsense going on in the Salish Sea. What the heck is going on? Feet are washing up on shore. Why? No one really seems to know.

My Opinion: Tragically, I think these feet are those of those who have chosen to take their own lives or have died in other disastrous situations. Anytime a body is lost at sea, it is going to decompose or be eaten at by wildlife and the bones will sink to the bottom of the ocean. More than likely the only parts that will parts that will survive are the feet; they are protected by shoes from decomposition and wildlife and the shoes can float. If possible, I think it is important for officials to DNA test any feet that wash up on shore, this way we can both keep track of the remains and connect them to any missing persons cases. This way we might be able to connect the remains to their loved ones and solve what is actually going on.

Random Post: Keith Morrison, Dateline, & Bill Hader

So this is a completely random post. It is no secret that I have a love for true crime. Dateline is my absolute favorite show and I've seen nearly every episode at least once or twice. My reason for this post is to find the specific episode in which Keith Morrison states, "Oh that pesky DNA," as quoted by comedian, Bill Hader. From my search it looks like the episode aired sometime before the year 2016 (according to a poster on a random website). It was definitely in an episode before 2016 which was the interview in which Bill Hader references the quote. I remember it being in one of the previews for the week's episode, right at the end of the episode.

It is important to note that Morrison states he never used the phrase "pesky DNA" as stated in the article linked below. Bill Hader, however, refutes this by referring to a texted he received from from fellow former employee of SNL, John Mulaney, who allegedly saw the clip.

If anyone knows which episode I'm referencing, please (PLEASE!!) let me know.
