Unsolved Deepdive; Mysteries, Roanoke Island

The What: This is a case that has interested me for decades. I still remember first learning about Roanoke in elementary school. I was shocked to learn that over a hundred people could go missing and we still have no idea what actually happened to them.

The Background: During the late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I of England decided to take a leaf out of her distant relatives in Spain; set up colonies in the Americas. In July of 1587, 118 people sailed to North America with the intent to set up English Colonies. On August 27th, the leader of the colony, John White sailed back to England for supplies. However, due to tensions between England and Spain, White was unable to return to the colony until August of 1590. To his horror, the settlement had been disbanded, homes and buildings completely dismantled. The only note to what happened what "CROATOAN".  To this day, no one knows what happened to the settlers.

My Thoughts: I am still tormented by this case. I have no idea what happened. It's likely that they ran out of food and sought out help from the indigenous peoples around them or they ran out of food and were attacked/they feared the indigenous peoples around them. I started a novel about this subject; I'll keep you updated if it turns into anything.

....Stay Tuned...
